First direct demonstration of far-UVC efficacy against airborne pathogens in an occupied indoor location.
Method
Four ceiling-mounted 222 nm fixtures in a mouse-cage cleaning room within an animal-care facility. Aerosolised murine norovirus measured, with irradiance kept within current recommended regulatory limits.
What it shows
Infectious airborne murine norovirus reduced by 99.8% (95% CI 98.2-99.9%). Bench studies suggest this virus is a conservative surrogate for influenza and coronaviruses.
What it does not show
Uncertainties in airflow patterns, virus residence time and delivered dose introduce error into the inactivation estimate. The setting is an animal facility, not a home or office.
Note
Consistent with earlier chamber studies, aerosolised virus susceptibility was significantly higher at room scale than in bench-scale tests.
